Fun served at Sat. mall event

HOUGHTON – Families were helped in many ways Saturday afternoon during the Community Family Fun Day at the Copper Country Mall.

The second-year event, put on by Houghton Baptist Church, ran from noon to 3 p.m. and served more than 700 people, with assistance from more than 60 volunteers from the church and other local organizations.

“It’s amazing,” HBC Pastor David Whitaker said. “We just want to show the love of Christ here to the community. We’re not here to raise any money, we just want to be a blessing.”

Free lunch was provided at the event, and through Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC) of the Copper Country, another 144 meals were given out to those in need for dinner as well.

With bounce houses, face painting and more available, there were plenty of opportunities for kids to have fun, and with many informational booths on hand, adults had plenty to explore, too.

Life Outreach Center, for example, had a table on hand, shortly after putting on its 5- and 10-kilometer walk/run event “Run for Their Lives” event along the Houghton waterfront Saturday morning.

The fun day event was put on by the help of sponsors Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, McDonalds, Festival Foods, Vollwerth & Baroni’s Company, Portage Lake Golf Course, Hunan Garden, Michigan Technological University, Walmart and the Copper Country Mall.

It also signaled the start of HBC’s Vacation Bible School, which started Sunday and runs through Thursday, each day from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Children and students through the 12th grade can start attending at any point.
