Catherine Ann Schwenk
HOUGHTON – Catherine Ann Schwenk, 59, died peacefully in the arms of her loving family at her home on Saturday, June 8, 2013.
Cathy was born October 9, 1953, to Rosemary and the late Henry “Hank.” She had two sisters, Mary and Susan and one brother, Donald. Cathy was the wonderful aunt of Alison, Joseph, Bradley, Alex, Michael and Rosanna and the great aunt of Emily.
Catherine was a student of the very first class of the Copper Country Day Care Center for Trainable Retarded Children, which opened January 2, 1963. The classes were held in the basement of the Holy Rosary Church in Lake Linden. Her father was one of the instrumental founders of Special Education.
Cathy did not graduate with an academic degree, but she was our teacher, a brilliant instructor in so many ways, especially that of life. She gently demonstrated to us how to kindly love, to be grateful and to value and appreciate all the little things in life that most take for granted. Cathy also taught us to be content, to graciously accept who we are, to try to make the most of each day as best as we can and to never, ever give up. Catherine Ann was the love and the brightest light of our lives. She will be so sadly missed by those who were lucky enough to have known her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Houghton with Rev. Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Visitation will be in the church one hour prior to Mass. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
The O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock is assisting with the arrangements. Please go to oneilldennisfh.com to leave online condolences.
