Late surge for Post 90
HOUGHTON – American Legion Post 90 caught fire late, scoring 13 of its 21 runs in the seventh and eighth innings for a 21-16 comeback win over Pat’s Foods in Copper Country men’s slowpitch play Monday in Hurontown.
Dean Scherbring led the winners offensively, going 4-for-5 with a triple. Allen Klutts was a single short of the cycle and one of five Post 90 players with a three-hit game, including Kevin LaRoux (two doubles), Jason Wilks (a triple), Bill Bastion (a triple) and Joe Rivest (two triples).
In defeat, Pat’s got three hits from Henry Baron and Max LeSatz.
Miller’s Lanes/The Edge/906 Entertainment split in a doubleheader at Laurium. The opener was a 20-13 win over Rippa Products.
Sean Conners was 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles in the win. Jim Perron also had a perfect night, recording hits in all four trips. D.J. Schmitt and Matt Tchida also had four hits, while Rod Barnes, Dan Eikenberry, Sean Perron and Derek Poyhonen posted three.
In Game 2, Team 7 held on for a 23-18 victory. Stats for the winners weren’t available at press time, but Barnes had four more singles for Miller’s, with D.J. Coponen homering twice in his three hits. D.J. Schmitt also had a three-hit game.
At Hancock Driving Park, Downtowner 2 took down Monte Carlo 23-5.
Erik Nettell hit for the cycle, while Dave Usitalo and Scott Hall had three-hit games.
