Sayen’s, Baraga in Junior title game
HOUGHTON – After winning its first tournament game on an extra-inning squeeze bunt, Sayen’s Auto found it easier going in round two, bouncing Kevin’s Self Storage 13-3 in five innings of Junior (age 13-14) in Kearsarge Tuesday.
Pat Cortright continued a torrid stretch of hitting, going 3-for-3 with a walk and going a homer short of the cycle.
Sayen’s busted out for a six-run first inning. Cortright drove in the first run on an RBI single, followed by RBI singles from Alan Jurmu and Jaden Janke and a two-RBI double from Brody Budweg. Budweg came around to score on a wild pitch.
Kevin’s pulled two runs back after Lee Markham’s RBI double. Markham scored on an error.
Sayen’s put the game away with three runs in the second and four in the third. Cortright and Jurmu had RBI hits in both innings.
Jurmu added three hits, while Jaden Wood and Darren Nordstrom added two.
Jurmu was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit and one walk in three innings.
In the other semifinal, Baraga defeated Middleton Builders 8-7, setting up a title game for Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Kearsarge.
In Keweenaw Little League Minor (age 9-10) play, Legion Post 90 rolled to a 12-4 win over 41 Lumber.
Isaiah Brennan and Caleb Bach led the winners with two hits and three RBIs apiece, while Justin Trevarrow went four innings for the pitching win. He struck out seven.
Post 90 faces Copper World Thursday in the semifinals at the Gipp Recreation Complex in Laurium.
Monday, Superior Service advanced in the Portage Lake Little League Minor bracket with a win over Chassell VFW.
Eli Larson and Abel Rajala had three hits in the win while four others had two hits apiece.
Superior Service will face Auto Pro Glass and Tire in one semifinal at 5:15 today, while J. Peltier Construction meets Tervo Agency in the other at 7.
