PL Minors start with shutout

MARQUETTE – The Portage Lake Little League All-Stars advanced easily into the second round of the District 11 Minor (age 9-10) division tournament by blanking Penokee Range 7-0 Saturday.

Davin Hill pitched five innings of five-hit ball and struck out 10 while going 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles, a triple and scored twice.

Portage Lake took the lead in the second after Austin Salani reached on a fielder’s choice, scored on Shawn Ruotsala’s RBI single and Ruotsala later scored on a Thomas Bump RBI single.

In the third, PL tacked on two more runs when Tanner Larson singled in a run and later came around to score.

Hill drove in an insurance run with his triple in the fifth, then scored on Mason Mikesch’s RBI single. Mikesch also scored to give Portage its final total.

Portage Lake will face Keweenaw, a 15-5 winner over Portage Lake 2, in round two tonight in Marquette.

PL2 hung on in the tournament by dropping Penokee 12-6 in an elimination game Sunday.

In Major (age 11-12) baseball at Ironwood, Portage Lake defeated Keweenaw in a first-round meeting Saturday afternoon, but PL went into the elimination bracket Sunday after an 18-5 belting from the host Penokee Range team.

That sets up another local-local showdown between PL and the winner of Sunday’s elimination game between Baraga County and Keweenaw (results not submitted) tonight in Ironwood. The final phase of the tournament, incorporating the surviving teams from Marquette County, begins Tuesday in Ironwood.
