Donald G. Johnson

CALUMET – Donald G. Johnson, 78, of Calumet/Lac La Belle passed away from cancer on Thursday morning July 11, 2013, at his home in Calumet.

Don was born on June 30, 1935, in Calumet, a son of Norman G. and Annabelle (Elenich) Johnson.

He graduated from Calumet High School in 1953. The summer after graduation he worked on an ore freighter for one year.

Don was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. After his time in the military, he attended the Henry Ford Community College. He was employed by the Dearborn Ford Motor Company in the Engineering Department, retiring after 30 years.

He returned to Calumet in 1986 to live and spend his time gutting and remodeling his cottage at Lac La Belle and the 125 year old family home in Calumet. He was an accomplished, self-taught carpenter/plumber/electrician.

Don was an active member of the Elks for 35 years (Plymouth and Calumet) and the Hazel Park Eagles Club. He was recently honored for having served for 25 plus years in the Lac La Belle Fire Department. He was also an active member of the CHS yearly 1953 reunions and the CHS alumni band.

He was preceded in death by, his father, Norman and mother, Annabelle; brothers, Norman “Bootsie”, Jay “Skeezie”, Warren “Skip”, and Keith “Butch”; infant brother, Glen; brother-in-law Bart Quello; sisters-in-law Eleanor (Murphy) Johnson and Marilyn (Lett) Johnson; nieces, Susan Quello and Karen Johnson.

Don is survived by, brother, James of Royal Oak; sister, Priscilla Quello of Laurium; sisters-in-law, Sandy (Voros) Johnson and Maryann (Klosky) Johnson-DeCapo; nieces and nephews, Larry, Janet, Barbara, Michael, Kevin, Lynn, Judy, Pam, Jay, Patty, Tammy, Sheri, Janice, Krista, Diana, and Brian; as well as numerous great nieces and great nephews.

Don’s family would like to extend a special “thank you” to Jim, Krista and Todd for the months of travel and special care that they gave to Don during his illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday July 15, 2013, in the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet. The Rev. Kenneth Toth will officiate.

Friends may call in the funeral home from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2013. The Calumet Elks will have a service at 7:45 p.m.

Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
