Hill, PL Minors in full control

MARQUETTE – Davin Hill and the Portage Lake Little League Minor (age 9-10) All-Stars put the finishing touches on a masterpiece performance in the district tournament Friday.

Hill threw a complete game one-hitter as Portage Lake closed out Negaunee and the district championship with a 9-0 win.

Portage Lake outscored its opposition 40-1 in four games and did not walk a batter.

“Davin and Mason (Mikesch) just threw strike after strike and just mowed them down all tournament,” PL manager Don Hill said of his primary pitchers.

The game was closer than the score looked, as Negaunee remained within 3-0 through four innings. However, Negaunee put only one runner on base: a fourth-inning single by Michael Dellangelo off the glove of first baseman Eli Larson.

Davin Hill threw 70 pitches (the maximum is 75), struck out 12 and faced only one batter above the minimum.

“He got ahead in the count, then he was able to mix pitches and mix speeds,” Don Hill said.

Davin Hill led off the first inning with a single and moved up on a fielder’s choice. Mikesch drove him in with an RBI single, then scored on Colin Cowell’s RBI single. Cowell came around after Larson’s hit was misplayed in the field.

Those remained the only runs in the game until the fifth, when Mikesch doubled in Austin Salani, Cowell followed with an RBI single, Larson added an RBI double and three players scored when a Davin Hill hit was mishandled.

Mikesch, Larson and Cowell had two hits apiece. Portage Lake finished with six for the game.
