L’ANSE – Vernon Warren, 72, of New Blaine, Ark. and L’Anse, passed away unexpectedly on July 11, 2013.
Vernon was born July 31, 1940, to the late William Boyd Warren and Sibyl (Smith) Warren in Clarksville, Ark. He grew up in Clarksville and Coal Hill, Ark.
In 1958, he joined the Army and served at the Detroit Defense Missile System on Grosse Isle. There, he met and married Dorothy Somero, the mother of their five daughters.
After discharge from the Army, Vern and Dorothy made their home in Madison Heights. Vern worked in quality control, forging and production supervision for General Motors for 28 years, retiring at 52.
He and Dorothy moved to Atlantic Mine and enjoyed life together until Dorothy passed away on February 28, 2002.
The next year, Vern began dating Beth Virtanen and followed her to Puerto Rico where she was employed. They lived there for four years and were married on July 20, 2007, in Houghton. They spent a year in Canada, returned to Atlantic Mine, and then moved to New Blaine, but they also kept a place in L’Anse where they spent summers on Keweenaw Bay.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; siblings, Kenneth, William, Bobby and Rayma Warren.
Surviving are his wife, Beth Virtanen; daughters, Verna (Mike) Warren, Debbie Bellard, Wanda (George) Dickerson, Karen (John Urban) Warren, Sandy (Kevin) Spencer; stepsons, Shane Hirvi and Brandon Hirvi; brothers, Charles (Nancy) Warren, Edward (Peggy) Warren, Wayne (Brenda) Warren; sister, Linda Warren; numerous grand and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2013, in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, with Pastor David Weber to officiate. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services on Thursday in the mortuary.
Military rites will be conducted by the Copper Country Veteran’s Association following the service.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on July 27, 2013, in the Roller-Cox Funeral Home in Clarksville, Ark., with visitation at 1 p.m.
