Elizabeth May “Peggy” Taskila

NEGAUNEE – Elizabeth May “Peggy” Taskila, 88, formerly of Negaunee, died on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had resided for the past two years.

Peggy was born May 28, 1925, in Hemel Hempsted, England to Henry and Lily (Piggott) Heath.

She met Donald W. Taskila while he was serving in the U.S. Army in England during WWII. They married September 4, 1944, and she came to the U.S. by ship in 1946.

Following Donald’s service to his country, they lived in Toivola before moving to Negaunee in 1959.

She began working at the Breitung Hotel as a housekeeper when the youngest of their five children started school. She then worked as a nurse aide at Morgan Heights Sanitarium until 1977 when they moved to Lake Bluff, Ill., where she became a housekeeper and maid for the William McCormick Blair/John Brian Estate. She retired in 1987 and they returned to the Upper Peninsula.

Peggy enjoyed her many trips to Toivola to visit with friends and family.

Surviving are four sons, Philip of Negaunee, Gary (Trudy) of Negaunee, Howard (Judy) of Ishpeming and Gene (Patsy) of West Hartford, Conn.; a daughter, Donna (Michael) Jarvi of Lake Bluff, Ill.; grandchildren, Kevin (Michelle) Taskila, Kirk Taskila, Kristopher (Kari) Taskila, Carrie (Jim) Miller, Daniel (Regina) Taskila, Dawn (Dee) Taskila-Gebroe, Lisa (Chad) Kirby, Emi (James) Carmichael, and Jake (Eliza) Jarvi; great-grandchildren, Jenna Miller, Todd (Malynda) Taskila, Chelsea (Jeff) Marta, Marissa, Sophia and Annabelle Taskila, Lerek, Elijah, Finley and Avery Kirby; great-great-grandchildren, Tucker Taskila, Tiara and Joey Marta, and another expected in January; two sisters, Josephine Tarrett and Phyllis Smith, both of England; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald W. Taskila, on July 6, 2004; three brothers, Eric and Edward Heath, and Frank Kiley; two sisters, Marjorie Dickinson and Elsie Upton.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 22 in the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Sutherland officiating. Interment will be in the Toivola Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 2 p.m. until the time of services at 3 p.m. in the funeral home on Monday.
