Gary W. Blau
CALUMET – Gary W. Blau, 82, a resident of Calumet went to be with the Lord on July 20, 2013.
He was born on March 21, 1931, in Calumet, a son of the late Earl and Jennie (Sorensen) Blau.
He was raised in Tamarack location and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working at local farms, especially Koskela’s.
Gary was a very hard working and energetic person. At a young age, he became a miner at Calumet and Hecla. He also mined gold in South Dakota. He worked in Detroit in the early 1950s, but returned with his family to Calumet.
In the 1970s, he owned and operated Gary’s Town House Cafe. His favorite occupation of all was operating heavy equipment in road construction for Bacco Construction and other companies. In his later years he was the owner and innkeeper at the Thimbleberry Inn Bed & Breakfast and retired from Lutheran Social Services as their maintenance man a few years ago.
He was first married to Betty Niemi and later married Lois Alberg on February 18, 1989, and was devoted to their life together. They went on many adventures together including annual trips to Norway to fish and visit relatives who became beloved friends. He enjoyed hosting and cooking for Lois’ family who came from Wisconsin for skiing.
Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Nita and Geraldine; brothers, Earl Jr. and Raymond; his first wife, Betty and their infant children Gary Jerome Jr. and Betty May.
Surviving are his wife, Lois; daughter, Sandra and her children, Aaron and Jesse Sweener; sister, Barbara (George) Kausie; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 24, 2013, at noon in Faith Lutheran Church with Pastor Peter Vorhes to officiate.
Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until noon. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
The Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family with the arrangements.
