Donald W. Rogers

CALUMET – Donald W. Rogers, 88, a resident of Calumet passed away on Friday, July 19, 2013, at the Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium.

He was born on April 6, 1925, in Calumet, a son of the late Stanley and Elizabeth Chynoweth (Rosemergy) Rogers.

On November 27, 1954, Donald married Mary Lou Frank.

In June of 1943, Donald enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served in the South Pacific during WWII. Upon his return from war in December 1945, Donald received his high school diploma from Calumet High School.

He soon found employment with the C&H Mining Company (Universal Oil) as a purchasing agent until the mine closed in 1969. He then became Office Manager at Standard Service and Supply in Iron Mountain. He owned and operated Rogers Party Store on Fifth Street in Calumet. He was also the purchasing manager at the Homestake Mine in Centennial. He then worked at the Empire Mine expansion in Palmer and finally for Williams Parts and Supply in Laurium. He retired in 1981.

Don enjoyed construction, stream fishing, hunting, flying planes and coaching hockey and baseball. He loved spending time in the Keweenaw on Gratiot Lake in his early years and later at Lake Medora, where he built family cabins. In the summertime, family would gather to enjoy boating, fishing, and sitting around the campfire. His biggest enjoyment was being with his family and talking about history.

He was a member of the Calumet United Methodist Church, a life member of the Copper Country Masonic Lodge in Hancock, 32nd degree Scottish Rite of Marquette, and Ahmed Shriners of Marquette.

Donald is survived by his wife, Mary Lou of Calumet; children, Donna (Gary) Koskiniemi, Mary Beth (Craig) Hodapp, Stan (Loriann) Rogers, Paul (Sally) Rogers, Bruce (Regina) Rogers; grandchildren, Michael (Sarah) Koskiniemi, Valerie Koskiniemi (Joshua) Bertrand, Joshua Phillips, Megan Phillips, Samantha Rogers (Dusty) Collins, Donald Rogers, Tim Rogers, Katie Rogers, Nick Rogers, Clarissa Rogers, Samuel Rogers, Benjamin Rogers and Julia Rogers; great grandchildren, Kamryn Koskiniemi, Piper Koskiniemi, and Asher Bertrand; brother, Bob (Lois) Rogers of Calumet; sister, Elizabeth (Norman) Everett of Reno, Nev.; brother-in-law, David (Dottie) Frank of Louisville, Ky.; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Calumet United Methodist Church with Pastor Bob White to officiate. Friends may call at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral in the church on Wednesday.

Burial with Military Rites will be held Thursday, July 25 at 1 p.m. in Section 76, Lake View Cemetery, Calumet.
