Alma V. Pyykkonen
PAINESDALE – Alma V. Pyykkonen, 81, a former resident of Painesdale passed away Tuesday evening July 23, 2013, at Woodland Haven of the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past three years.
She was born on March 16, 1931, in McAllen, Texas, a daughter of the late Joseph and Lucricia (Villanueva) Valls. As a child, she moved with her family to Alice, Texas, where she graduated from William Adams High School.
On September 15, 1953, she was united in marriage to Clarence “Pete” Pyykkonen. The couple first resided in Alice, Texas, and since 1963 had made their home in Painesdale. On August 17, 2009, Pete preceded Alma in death.
Alma was employed as a nurse’s aide mostly in the Emergency Room for Portage Hospital, retiring in 1995 after 30 years.
Mrs. Pyykkonen was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range where she was active with the Altar Society. She was a member of Ranger’s Post #6165 VFW Auxiliary of South Range. Alma also enjoyed sewing projects.
Preceding her in death were her husband Pete; her parents; her sister, Lily and her brothers, Robert, Joe Jr., Arnold and Ernesto.
Surviving are her children, Linda (Charles) Yahn of Nashville, Tenn., Robert (Katie) Pyykkonen of Spencerport, N.Y., Richard (Betty) Pyykkonen of Greece, N.Y., Joseph (Lisa) Pyykkonen of South Range; her grandchildren, Sara (Bill) Ture of Rush, N.Y., Nicole, Mikaela & Megan Pyykkonen of Greece, N.Y., Brendan & Alexis Pyykkonen of South Range; her brothers, Eddie (Corine) Valls, Louis (Olga) Valls, and Andy Valls; her sister, Bessie Garcia; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Alma will be held 11 a.m. Friday July 26, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church of South Range, with Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. View Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday July 26, 2013, from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
