Bad state start for Hancock

ADRIAN – The Hancock Post 186 American Legion baseball team ran into a familiar problem Thursday to begin the state Class A Tournament Thursday: The Gladstone Indians.

Hancock, which had lost four times to Gladstone this season in six attempts, made it a fifth Thursday as Gladstone rolled to a 15-1 victory in five innings.

Gladstone took control with a four-run second inning, then piled on five apiece in the fourth and fifth.

Hancock committing six errors early had a lot to do with the outcome, but so did only two hits for the game. Both were off the bat of Gabe Rupright, who drove in Hancock’s only run with an RBI single in the second inning.

Mike Saari took the loss for Hancock, while Jake Pearson went four innings for the win and also had an inside-the-park home run that scooted to the wall on the artificial turf at Adrian College.

Hancock plays Ida today at 9 a.m. in an elimination game, with the winner facing Gladstone or Gladwin at 2 p.m.
