Floyd Sidney Voltz

PELKIE – Floyd Sidney Voltz, Jr., 81, of Pelkie, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital, Marquette in the company of family and friends.

He was born in Evanston, Ill. on June 4, 1932, the son of the late Floyd S. and Hilja “Patsy” (Erkkila) Voltz, Sr.

Floyd graduated from Evanston High School in 1950.

He married his first love, the former Barbara Stahl, in Bethel Lutheran Church, Ishpeming, on Nov. 10, 1950.

Floyd proudly served as a Michigan State Police Trooper at Cheboygan, Ithaca, and L’Anse posts from 1956 until his retirement on April 24, 1982.

Upon his retirement he established a second career, starting his own accounting business, North Star Tax and Business Service, which he operated from 1982 until 2004.

He was a faithful member of S.S. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, Houghton, and a lifetime member of the Ottawa Sportsman’s Club.

He loved his family, and his four legged friends, enjoyed working, going to deer camp, touring on the Gold Wing, and the challenges of the U.P.’s great outdoors, mowing and blowing in season.

Floyd is survived by his loving wife Barbara; son, Victor Voltz of Grand Rapids; daughters, Bonnie of Baraga, Patti (John) Tembreull of L’Anse, Cheryl Hirzel of Baraga, and Gretchen Voltz of Marquette; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Bonnie (Richard) Shaver of Alma, Mich.; sister-in-law, Marlene (Larry) Felan of Fayette, Ala.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his nephew, Fred.

Funeral services for Mr. Voltz will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, in the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor Aaron Gherke officiating. The family will greet friends in the funeral chapel on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Following the funeral service, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and refreshments in the Harrington Gathering room, located in the funeral chapel.

Following the fellowship, interment will take place in the Pelkie Cemetery.
