Pat’s in position to take top spot

HANCOCK – Pat’s Foods put itself in position to grab all or part of the Twilight League regular season championship by sweeping L’Anse 7-2 and 2-0 in a make-up doubleheader Tuesday.

With the wins, Pat’s (9-5) can win the league outright by sweeping Mosquito Inn-Toivola (5-8) in a twinbill tonight or share it as part of a two- or three-way tie if it splits.

In the opener, Pat’s scored five times in the second inning of the five-inning game to take control.

Andrew Ewer made a major contribution, going 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Dan Pertile bagged two hits and an RBI in the leadoff spot.

All this came in support of Pat’s ace Lee Naugle, who allowed two earned runs on four hits, striking out five and walking two.

Naugle kept the ball for game two, going the distance again and allowing just three hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Offensively, the hosts scratched out single runs in the first two innings, driven in by Pertile and Ewer. Pertile went 2-for-3.
