Learn about the Affordable Care Act

Since it became law in March of 2010, the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, has been a contentious topic among most Americans. Many aspects of the law won’t go into effect until later this year but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming the subject of intense scrutiny, joke material for late night TV hosts and about 40 times the target of repeal in the U.S. House of Representatives.

While everyone seems to have an opinion on Obamacare, we wonder how many people really understand the law and its many applications.

We here in the Copper Country have the opportunity in the next two days to find out more about the Affordable Care Act by a recognized expert in the health care field.

Brett Williams of Michigan Consumers for Healthcare Coalition, will give three public presentations on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will affect families.

From noon until 2 p.m. today he will present a forum at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse. His talk will focus on the impact of the law on the business community.

At 7 p.m. tonight Williams will speak at the BHK Child Development Center in Houghton. The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Copper Country and the Western U.P. Health Department. Specifically he will discuss the act’s impact on families.

The local business community will have another opportunity to learn about Obamacare’s impact when the Keweenaw Peninsula Chamber of Commerce sponsors an “Issues and Eggs” forum, Thursday.

The special two-hour meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at the Shelden Grill in Houghton.

The Affordable Care Act will impact nearly every American, young or old, rich or poor. We appreciate the sponsoring organizations efforts to enlighten residents on the effect the law will have on families and businesses alike and we encourage everyone to make an effort to attend one of these presentations.
