Kenneth J. Stevens

DOLLAR BAY – Kenneth J. Stevens, 91, of Dollar Bay, passed away early Tuesday morning, August 6, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

He was born in Woodside Location on April 18, 1922, to the late William and Anna (Hardy) Stevens. Ken graduated from Dollar Bay High School in 1942 and soon joined the U.S. Marines during World War II. He served in the Central and Southwest Pacific Theaters from 1942 to 1945, participating against the enemy in the Solomon Islands and in the capture of Guam.

Ken returned to work at Atlas Powder Company in Senter Location and in White Pine. He later worked for Osceola Township and at Portage View Hospital until his retirement.

On September 20, 1952, he married Margaret Ewen at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Hubbell. They lived their married lives in Senter Location and Dollar Bay.

Ken was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Dollar Bay, the Knights of Columbus, was a member and past commander of Bay Post 6028 VFW in Dollar Bay and a former member of the Dollar Bay Volunteer Fire Department.

Besides fishing, he enjoyed following the Detroit Lions and Red Wings and the New York Yankees. He also enjoyed being with his grandchildren, especially cheering for them in sports activities.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy; two brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Woodside; six children, Susan McDaniel of Calumet, Bill (Mary) Stevens of Tamarack City, Jeff (Mary) Stevens of Dollar Bay, Nikki (Donny) Ebert of Woodside, Laura ( Mike) Baril of Dollar Bay and Kenny (Mary) Stevens of Dollar Bay; 12 grandchildren, Eric, Rebecca, Nicholas, Michelle, Kimberly, Jacob, Katherine, Michael, Mandy, Emily, Sara and Robbie; nine great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Francis of Assisi Church in Dollar Bay with Rev. Fr. William Ssozi to officiate. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.

Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday in the O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock.
