Fred R. Lucchesi

HOUGHTON – Fred R. “Ace” Lucchesi, 79, of Houghton, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013.

He was born in Osceola Twp., on Nov. 8, 1933, a son of the late Ralph and Ruth (Hagan) Lucchesi. Following the death of his mother, Ace’s father married Edith Fillbrook.

Ace attended the Houghton Portage Township Schools. Following his junior year, he enlisted into the military to serve his country with the U.S. Army, serving from 1953 to 1955, and then served six years in the Army National Guard. After his military discharge, he completed his education and graduated from the Houghton High School.

On Dec. 2, 1966, he was married to the former Barbara Rogers in Houghton. She preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 2007.

Ace was employed at 41 Lumber, retiring after 35 years to continue an incredible journey with his loving soul mate and wife, Barb, who suffered from a lengthy illness.

Ace was a member of the Catholic faith. He was a past member of Alfred Erickson Post 186 American Legion in Hancock, served as a volunteer for the Houghton Fire Department from 1968-1975, served for many years on the Dee Stadium Committee and was active in Copper Country hockey.

He supported youth sports and was a longtime supporter of the Houghton Sports Booster Club and the Portage Lake Pioneer Hockey Team. Although nothing gave him more pleasure than watching his children participate in all of their activities. Always there with love and encouragement and a great deal of pride for their achievements.

Family was most important to Ace. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren who brought great joy to him. He always looked forward to spending time at the camp he built in Toivola. He enjoyed hunting there and loved the peacefulness of being in the woods. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Green Bay Packers, Portage Lake Pioneers Hockey and Michigan Tech “Huskies” Hockey.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dino (Tracey) Lucchesi of Grayslake, Ill. and Michael “Jet” Lucchesi of Houghton; a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine “Cathy” (Brian) Gedda of Hancock; seven grandchildren, Danielle (Andy) Brosig of Green Bay, Andrea (Joe) Lampinen of Green Bay, Cassandra (Roland) Gerhart of Calumet, Gianni and Dominic Lucchesi of Grayslake, Ill., Nick and Kaela Gedda, both of Green Bay; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Glen (Janet) Lucchesi of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Frances “Cookie” (Bob) Hitchcock of Fenton, Mich.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Samuelson of Houghton, and Joan (Mick) Flynn of Seattle; a brother-in-law, Don (Maureen) Morin of Houghton; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and many good friends.

Besides his parents and wife, Ace was also preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Vi and Fran Morin; a brother and sister-in-law, Deacon Paul and Geraldine Lucchesi; two sisters, Flossie and Pat; and two brothers-in-law, Ed Samuelson and Ed Dreblow; along with two great-nephews, Jason Jaehnig and Christian Mayra.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Houghton, with Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday in the church. There will be no visitation prior to the Mass on Tuesday. Burial will follow in the Forest Hill Cemetery with military rites to be conducted by the Copper Country Veteran’s Association.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portage Lake Pioneers Hockey Team, 715 Pine St., Hancock, MI 49930, or Houghton Sports Boosters Club, 1603 Gundlach Rd., Houghton, MI 49931, in the name of Ace Lucchesi.
