Over 50 softball: South Range advances, Houghton hangs on

TAPIOLA – South Range advanced in the winners’ bracket of the Over 50 Softball League playoffs with a 12-6 win over Tapiola Thursday night.

Neither team did much hitting in the game, but Range took advantage of several walks and a couple of errors.

Winning pitcher Dave Kaiponen limited Tapiola to just seven hits, while losing hurler Jed Denomie gave up eight raps.

Brien Ricci, Dave Fehringer and Joe Rossi had two hits each for the winners, Fehringer and Kaiponen homering.

Tom Clisch, Harold Filpus and Mike Harkonen picked up two raps each for Tapiola.

In a losers’ bracket game, Houghton scored a 13-12 win over Chassell as Steve Carlson singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Houghton led 11-0 at one point before Chassell roared back to knot it at 12-12.

Dave Usitalo, Jed Pollard and Carlson counted three raps apiece for the winners, while Jerry Jackovich and Jim Perrin picked up two.

Daryl Putala and Nick Lindemann had two hits each for Chassell.

Steve Dunstan was the winning hurler and Mitch Lake absorbed the mound defeat.

Tapiola and Houghton meet at 7 p.m. Monday in a losers’ bracket contest.
