John Henry Banfield

CALUMET – John Henry Banfield, 75, a resident of Calumet, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2013, at the Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium.

He was born on July 11, 1938 in Calumet, a son of Jan and Elma (Johnson) Banfield. He attended the local schools and worked as a heavy equipment operator for seasonal companies Miljevich Logging, in Wakefield as well as numerous other companies.

John was also a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy for four years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Leona Leskela; and two brothers, Bill & Roy “Bonty”.

John was a member of American Legion Post 291 Hubbell/Lake Linden. He was a Detroit Lions , Tigers and Red Wings fan. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, camping, & working on vehicles.

John recently celebrated his 75th birthday at Sunset Bay Campground.

He is survived by Cheryl Moilanen, the love of his life and caregiver; sons, Darren Banfield of N.J.. Brian Banfield of the Detroit area and Mike Banfield of N.J.; sister, Sandra Saatio of Calumet; and several nieces & nephews, including Allan Karvonen of Calumet who also served as a caregiver; Reino, Jimmy and Brian; a sister-in-law, Joanne Banfield of Calumet; and a nephew, Jan Banfield of Calumet.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday. August 19, 2013. in the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home, with Rev. Ken Toth to officiate.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
