Champion young golfers crowned

HOUGHTON-Stephen Butina from Painesdale beat Houghton’s Wyatt Liston on the first playoff hole after they both shot 78 to take home the 17 and under boys’ title in the Portage Lake Golf Course Junior Club Championship last weekend.

Both players were on the green of hole No. 10 in two shots, Butina managed to par, and Liston bogeyed. Third place went to Hancock’s Austin Mikesch, who shot an 8-over-par 80.

In the 17 and under girls’ division, Noelle Polakowski took home the title with a score of 87. Addison Cook took second place and Hannah Bershing was third. All the girls are from Houghton.

Eleven-year-old Peyton Dube from Hancock won the 14 and under girls title with a 9-hole score of 49. Lindsay Sandell was second with a 51 and Jillian Butvilas was third with a score of 52.

In the 14 and under boys’ division, Trevor Salata from Calumet beat his Calumet buddies Wyatt Tuoriniemi and Brad Gauthier. Salata shot an 18-hole score of 78 with an even-par 36 on the Portage (back) side.

In the 12 and under boys division, Trevor Tchida from Hancock shot a 9-hole score of 51 to beat Hancock’s Davin Hill by 1 stroke. Houghton’s George Butvilas took third with a 55.

In the 12 and under girls’ division, Jose Connors from Calumet beat Houghton’s Olivia Witting on the first extra hole to take home the title. They both tied with scores of 63.

In the 10 and under division, Hancock’s Kyle Mikkola shot a 7-hole score of 35 to win the division. Calumet’s Miles Brown took second place with a 41 and Houghton’s Peter Storer was third with a score of 45.

In the 8 and under division, Hancock’s Luke Mikkola won by shooting a 5-hole score of 29. Dylan Dube of Hancock finished one stroke back to finish second and Houghton’s Mika Jalkanen took third.
