Margaret “Mugs” Marie Noble
KALAMAZOO – Margaret “Mugs” Marie Noble passed into the arms of the Lord on August 20, 2013.
Born on September 2, 1922, in Kalamazoo, Mich. to John and Buelah (Calkins) Mapes.
Margaret was a graduate of Vicksburg (Michigan) High School and attended Western Michigan University of Kalamazoo, Mich., for one year. She graduated from the Edward W. Sparrow Hospital School of Nursing in Lansing, Mich., as a registered nurse.
In 1945 she married Jack Thurman.
Mrs. Noble was predeceased by her husband Charles E. Noble, whom she married in 1973; sister, Ardith Weston and son-in-law, Joseph R. Berish.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Kay (Jim Magnan) Berish of Kalamazoo, Mich. and Terri Lynn (Wayne) Martin of L’Anse, step-son, Charles (Sue) Noble; grandchildren, Stephanie (John) Eckley and Joseph (Erin) Berish. Mrs. Noble was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Abram and Willson Eckley and Hudson Berish.
She is survived by her dear friend, Betty I. Thurman of Naples, Fla.; several stepchildren and step grandchildren; and cherished friends, too numerous to name.
Margaret Noble resided in Kalamazoo County, for much of her life where she worked as a registered nurse and later as a restaurateur. She and Chuck lived in Richland for many years where they enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, snowmobiling and entertaining friends and family.
Many remember her as co-owner and operator of Jack Thurman’s Restaurant once located in downtown Kalamazoo. She was a great cook and her legacy was many treasured family recipes and memories of Thurman’s daily specials.
Mrs. Noble lived for several years in Naples, Fla. and later moved back to Michigan to be close to her family. She was a kidney dialysis patient for many years at the Western U.P. Dialysis Center. Her final residence was at The Bluffs in Houghton. She was a member of the L’Anse United Methodist Church in L’Anse.
Friends called Margaret Noble “Mugs” and later “Mugsie.” She said her mother called her that because she liked to “mug” for the camera. No wonder, as she was a beautiful person both inside and out.
A memorial service may be planned for a later date.
