Are festivals held too close?

To the editor:

It appeared that the Heritage Days finale in Calumet was not well-attended. First, it was poorly promoted this year – I heard many people complaining all week long that they didn’t know what was happening, where or when. Many people didn’t know whether there was a parade, or whether the Agassiz Park gathering was even taking place.

Also, placing Heritage Days in mid-August, when everything else is reaching its peak in the Keweenaw, seems counter productive. Between the multitude of other events taking place and the prime weather for outdoor recreation, it seems the worse time.

Finally, is it possible that Heritage Days is too close to Pasty Fest?

We just went through the same thing fewer than three months ago; it could be overkill.

Heritage Days is an important event – it needs better forethought.
