Lakes claim fourth straight WIC Invite championship

IRON RIVER – Lake Linden-Hubbell earned its fourth consecutive championship of the season-opening West Iron County Invitational Saturday.

In the round-robin format, the Lakes won 10 of 12 sets, sweeping Baraga (21-14, 21-18), Ironwood (21-7, 21-17), West Iron (23-21, 21-18) and Ewen-Trout Creek (21-3, 21-5).

The Lakes split with L’Anse and Dollar Bay. The Hornets bounced back from a 21-19 decision against them in set one for a 21-16 win and the Bays took the second set 21-17 against LL-H reserves after the Lakes won the opener 21-13.

Ciara Larson had a big day. The senior had 39 kills for the day and 30 digs, leading the Lakes in both categories.

Erin Gast also had 30 digs, while Morgan Codere added 17 and both Carli Ongie and Lauren Messner added 12 apiece.

Sarah Audette led the Lakes with 60 assists and 23 aces. Gast picked up 13 additional aces.

The Lakes return to action at Baraga Sept. 3.
