CHASSELL – Edwin Kauma, 89, a resident of Chassell, died on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the JourneyCare Hospice Center in Woodstock, Ill.
He was born in Kintyre, N.D. on May 3, 1924, a son of the late Benjamin A. and Sophie (Leukumaa) Kauma.
Edwin worked on the family farm in Chassell and was a graduate of the Chassell High School.
Edwin liked working with electronics. He enjoyed repairing radios and worked in inspections for Hallicrafters radios during WW II. He also worked at a radio factory in Finland, living there for one year. Edwin was also employed as a repairman at Montgomery Wards in Houghton and Wisconsin.
Edwin was a member of the Lutheran faith and a member of Suomi Kerho, serving as secretary for many years. He was active in Finnish American Societies, corresponding overseas.
He enjoyed woodworking and weaving on Finnish looms he built himself. Traveling to Finland several times to visit family and friends was something Edwin looked forward to. Another past time he enjoyed was Ham Radios.
Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Toivo and Nancy Kauma of Chassell; a brother-in-law, William J. Schmitz of Marengo, Ill.; three nephews, William M. Mykel Schmitz of Marengo, Ill., Paul Toivo (Melanie) Kauma of Chassell and Benjamin E. Kauma of Eagle, Mich.; a niece, Paula Schmitz of Thorndale, Texas; two great-nephews; cousins; and relatives in Finland.
Besides his parents, Edwin was also preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Eric and Bert; and two sisters, Bertha Kauma and Betty Schmitz.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 2013, in the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock, with Pastor Arvo Onermaa to officiate.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Tuesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
