Football roundup: Hornets beaten at West Iron County

IRON RIVER – West Iron broke open a close game with 20 unanswered points in the second half and defeated L’Anse 27-14 in WestPAC football action Friday.

The Trojans totaled 293 yards rushing, with Chasz Jonet (108 yards, one touchdown), Ron Varney (86 yards, one TD) and quarterback Andrew Peterson (72 yards, two TDs) leading the way.

“It was a marked improvement from the first week,” said Wykons coach Mike Berutti, his team slugging out a 7-0 win over Munising a week ago. “We were able to run the ball real well.”

The Wykons totaled 17 first downs to 15 for the Purple Hornets.

“L’Anse is big up front,” Berutti said. “They’re a senior-loaded team. This was a good win for us.”

L’Anse scored in the first quarter on a Brandon Kemppainen 1-yard dive, but not again until Jimmy Veker’s 12-yard run in the fourth.

West Iron outgained the Hornets 331-282.

“They have so many good athletes and such good team speed. They were really able to run us down,” Ontonagon coach Dave Linczeski said.

The Eagles (3-0) got three touchdown passes from Cooper Kerner, one in each of the first three quarters, with the first coming on the game’s first play from scrimmage, a 48-yard play to John Puffer.

Sam Lacko and Bailey Ramesh ran for touchdowns in the first half to give Pines a 24-0 lead, but the Gladiators pulled
