Finlandia volleyball, men’s soccer pick up weekend victories
MINNEAPOLIS – The Finlandia women’s volleyball team earned its first victory of the season at the North Central University Tournament Saturday.
The win came in the Lions’ last match against Trinity Bible College after prevailing 15-7 in the fifth set.
Emma Cole’s 19 kills led the way, while Augustine Brutus added 10. Katelyn Anderson passed out 30 assists and three players had double-figure digs led by Breanna Merriam’s 23.
“I was most impressed with Emma Cole’s play for the weekend,” coach Kristan Schuster said. “Emma had a solid weekend and played aggressive at the net. She pushed her teammates to step up their games. She and Augustine Brutus were large blocking forces at the net.”
Earlier in the day, Finlandia won its first set of the season in a 3-1 loss to Providence University College. Cole had nine kills and Nicole Parker seven, while freshman Rebecca Hulkonen posted 11 digs.
Friday, Finlandia lost 3-0 to Faith Baptist Bible College despite 11 Cole kills and 3-0 to the hosts.
Finlandia (1-7) hosts Northland for its home opener Wednesday night.
The Finlandia men’s soccer team split a pair of games at the Northland Invitational in Ashland, Wis., over the weekend.

Miguel Gamez made all five saves for Finlandia (2-2).
Finlandia’s women’s soccer team dropped 3-1 and 4-1 games to Knox and Eureka, respectively, also in Ashland.
Laura Kent put the Lions ahead in the ninth minute Friday, but the lead lasted only 16 minutes, and Knox took the lead 15 minutes into the second half.
