Janet E. Simi
ALPENA, Mich. – Janet E. Simi, 83, passed away on September 6, 2013, at home surrounded by her husband, Erwin and her cats Lucky and Flika, close by.
Janet Elvira Swanson was born to Leonard and Jenny (Carlson) Swanson in Ashland, Wis. on February 14, 1930.
She was cared for by her grandmother, Mrs. Carlson of Highland, Wis. upon her mother’s death.
Janet attended the local school until her grandmother’s passing when she was 13 years old. She moved to Baraga, to live with an aunt and uncle. There she attended Baraga High School graduating in 1948.
After graduation, Janet was employed by the Gitchee Gumee Oil and Coal Company of Ontonagon and Baraga as a bookkeeper and weight scale recorder for the coal dock office in Baraga.
Janet met and was married to Erwin Simi on June 26, 1965. During their 48 years of marriage, they moved away due to Erwin’s employment with the USDA Soil Conservation Service to Manistique, Mich. and then, Alpena in 1976.
Janet’s married life as a homemaker with her hobbies included sewing clothes for herself and shirts for Erwin.
After Erwin’s retirement, in 1994, Janet and Erwin spent their summers at Erwin’s family farm on White Siding Road in Nisula and winters in Alpena, Mich.
She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, its Alter Guild and quilting ministry.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Erwin; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial visitation will take place on Thursday in Grace Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. until time of memorial service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Thomas Orth officiating.
Inurnment is at St. Henry Lutheran Church Cemetery, Nisula, Michigan.
