Susan (Hellman) Lines
WASHINGTON, Mich. – Susan (Hellman) Lines, 63, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in her home on September 10, 2013 with her loving husband Art Lines at her side.
Susan was born in Hancock, on January 13, 1950, to the late Gordon and Gertrude (Decker) Hellman. She was raised in Hancock and was the third of four children; brothers, the late Gerald Hellman (deceased January 2011) and Michael Hellman; sister, Sharon (Hellman) Bauer. Susan was married to Art Lines and has one son, Jeff Lines of Houghton.
Susan graduated from Hancock High School in 1968. Susan attended Michigan Technological University and graduated with a bachelor of science in business administration in 1972. Susan’s career began early in life by taking over her brother’s paper route in Hancock and then as a clerk for Gartner’s Department Store. She worked summers for the Arcadian Copper Mine gift shop while attending Michigan Tech. Upon graduating from Michigan Tech, Susan and Art were married at St. Albert the Great Parish in Houghton. She joined her husband in Virginia, Minnesota where she started work at a local savings and loan. Later, she and her husband moved to the Detroit area where she took a job with Ford Motor Company in their accounting department.
Susan and Art returned to the Copper Country where Susan worked in the campus bookstore and later as a programmer in the Michigan Tech Information Systems department while her husband pursued a master’s degree. After Art’s graduation, the couple moved to Columbus, Ind., where they both worked for Cummins Engine Company. Susan was employed in the Information Systems department as a systems analyst.
In 1980 her son Jeff was born. The family then moved to Racine, Wisconsin where Susan worked for Western Publishing Company starting as a business analyst and progressing to Senior Director of Retail Services. After 13 years in Racine, the family moved to Chaska, Minnesota where Susan worked as a management information systems manager for SuperValu.
Susan and Art moved back to Racine, Wis., where Susan worked as a Senior Consultant at Keane Consulting. The couple then moved to Shelby Township/Washington, Mich., where she worked as Senior Manager of Partnerships & Analyst Relations for Volkswagen/T-Systems. Most recently, she served as Vice President of Operations for Saphran, Inc., a business software company.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Gertrude; brother, Gerald Hellman; brother in-law, L. David Bauer; and mother in-law, Alberta Lines.
She is survived by her husband, Art Lines; son, Jeff Lines; brother, Michael Hellman (Suzanne Bordeau); sister, Sharon (Hellman) Bauer; father in-law, Bradley Lines; brothers in-law, Willard Lines (Nancy), Marcus T. Lines (Rita), Bradley Lines Jr. (Diane); sisters in-law, Robin (Lines) Randall (Walt), Sherry (LaBine) Hellman; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A gathering of family and friends for a visitation in memory of Sue will begin at 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. officiated by Fr. Tom Slowinski on Saturday, September 14, 2013, in the Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons Funeral Home in Shelby Township, Michigan.
There will be a second gathering of family and friends for visitation and prayer service in the Copper Country on Monday, September 16, 2013, in the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock, with visitation from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with Fr. Willaim Ssozi to officiate. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
Donations can be made to the Michigan Tech Fund, 1400 Townsend Dr., Houghton, MI 49931, and must specify “In Memory of Susan Lines”. The funds will be directed to the Michigan Tech School of Business and be used towards supporting Women in Business/Computing programs in memory of Susan.
