Gremlins, Hornets get to 2-1
IRONWOOD – Houghton successfully carried the momentum from its double-overtime win against Westwood last week west to Ironwood, handing the Red Devils a 29-14 loss and improving the Gremlins’ record to 2-1 on the season.
Ben Collaer, who featured in a bruising role against Westwood, toted the ball successfully once again, scoring touchdowns on three, eight and one-yard runs in the first three quarters to gift the Gremlins a 22-0 lead. Thanks to a succesful option tandem between Collaer and running back Thomas Schmidt, Houghton piled up 164 yards on the ground over a clock-draining 55 attempts.
After Ironwood quarterback Adam Mackey cut the lead to two scores at the end of the third quarter with a 1-yard plunge, Houghton came right back down the field to cement the win with a 12-yard TD toss from Collaer to wide receiver Sam Bethancourt.
Ironwood actually outgained the Gremlins 291 yards to 189, but four turnovers (two fumbles, two interceptions) proved too much to overcome.

L’Anse 45, Ontonagon 6
ONTONAGON – L’Anse recovered from a loss to West Iron County last week by renewing focus on the physical side of the game.
And then some.
The Purple Hornets rolled to a 45-6 victory at Ontonagon Friday night, gaining 396 yards on the ground with some old-school running techniques. According to L’Anse coach Mark Leaf, the offensive line opened up sizeable holes and a rotating stable of talented backs hit them hard.
“I thought it was a nice bounce back,” Leaf said “The kids really responded. We came with a lot of energy and got out to a nice quick start. The offenive line was tremendous and the backs ran hard.”
L’Anse scored five straight touchdowns to open the first two quarters – with tailback Jimmy Veker totaling three scoring runs and Ryan Beauprey and Ryan LaBerge hitting pay dirt – before Ontonagon finally got on the board with a 20-yard pass from quarterback Tony Soumis to Drew Morris.
It was all L’Anse from there though, as a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Ostermeyer to Veker started the running clock and ended the Gladiators’ aspirations.
“The defense was swarming to the football,” Leaf said. “They really got after it.”
