Joseph Frederick Eilola Sr.
OSKAR – Joseph Frederick Eilola, Sr., 79, a longtime Oskar resident, died on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at the Omega House. He also resided in Hancock and for the past several years at Arbor Green in Houghton.
He was born in Oskar, on October 10, 1933, a son of the late Frank H. and Hulda (Perala) Eilola and attended the Liminga School.
In 1955, Joe and his family moved to Grass Lake, Mich., where he graduated from the Grass Lake High School. He was employed as a deputy for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and served with the Army National Guard. After returning to the Oskar area, Joe was employed locally with the Isle Royale National Park Service and prior to his retirement, worked at Peninsula Copper Industries in Hubbell.
Joe was first married to the former Georgia Stanley who preceded him in death. On April 5, 1977, he was married to Kathleen Voelker and she passed away in 2006.
Joe was a 40 year life member with the Masonic Lodge, first with the Excelsior Masonic Lodge of Grass Lake and later transferred his membership to the Copper Country Masonic Lodge 135 F&AM. He was a former member of the Stanton Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are a son, Joseph, Jr. and wife, Sheree of Inglis, Fla.; grandchildren, Joseph Eilola, III, and Libbi; great-grandchildren, Gage, Angelina and Evan; step-daughters, Kelly (Steve) Dube of Cedar Bay, Kathy (Rick) Cliche of Savanna, Ill., and Kim Marjamaa of Calumet; several step-grandchildren; three brothers, Jake (Louise) of Grass Lake, Dan of Lake Wales, Fla., and Tim (Carrie) of Jackson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joe was also preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Arlene Eilola from Liminga.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2013, in the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock.
A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Burial with graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday in the Oskar Cemetery with Pastor David Weber to officiate.
