AG taking comments on Portage/LifePoint

HOUGHTON – In early August, a definitive agreement between Portage Health and Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals was signed and sent to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office for approval. As part of that process, a forum on the proposal will take place today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Michigan Technological University’s Lakeshore Center at 600 East Lakeshore Drive.

In the proposed agreement between Portage Health and LifePoint, the Tennessee company will be 80 percent owner, and Portage Health will own 20 percent of what, if approved, will be a for-profit company.

The purpose of the forums is to provide an overview of the proposed transaction, outline the attorney general’s review process, and to allow for public comment and questions.

Members of the public who wish to speak during the public comment period are asked to fill out a comment card. About three minutes will be given to those wishing to speak.

Those not attending the forum but would like to comment on the proposal can send written comments to the attorney general’s office by e-mail to, or by United States Postal Service to Attorney General U.P. Hospital Comments P.O. Box 30213 Lansing, MI 48909.
