HANCOCK – Les Mattson, 86, passed away on September 23, 2013, at Houghton County Medical Care where he had been a resident since October 2012.
Born in Chatam, Mich., to a commercial fisherman family, Les moved to Hancock shortly after his marriage to Donna (Credland) who preceded him in death, July 5, 2010, after 54 loving years.
He is survived by his children, Richard of San Diego, Calif., Larry of Houghton, Debby (Chuck) of Chassell, Sheila (Dennis) of Hancock; grandchildren, Shienn, Penny and Tony.
A Navy veteran, Les worked in construction for 30 years before finding a home with the Isle Royale National Park. In 1980 Les did restoration work on an 1855 light house on the Island and in 1985 he began operating Edison Fishery as fisherman in charge for the park service. From 1992 through 2009, Les was the cultural demonstrator at Edison Fishery for Isle Royale. Les and Donna would talk to the tourists and catch fish, maintaining a live well for viewing at Edison and supplying trout and white fish for both research and the Rock Harbor Island Restaurant. When the Island would shut down for winter, Les and Donna would travel across the United States, mostly camping out on the deserts where they loved to rock hound.
A family memorial service was held Monday at Memorial Chapel in Hancock.
Condolences may be sent to Larry Mattson, 47553 U.S. 41, Houghton, MI 49931 or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
