Man wanted by police is apprehended

HOUGHTON – Just hours after the Houghton City Police Department issued a press release asking for the public’s assistance in looking for a fugitive, the man was arrested. The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department reports at 2 a.m. today deputies made contact with and arrested 26-year-old Travis Kevin Kuopus, of Houghton. Late yesterday afternoon the Houghton City Police Department issued a press release seeking the public’s help in looking for Kuopus, who they described as a fugitive-at-large. The search, according to police, was a joint effort between Houghton City Police, Laurium Village Police and Michigan State Police. Police said Kuopus had numerous warrants for his arrest, but did not release the exact nature of those warrants or details of any alleged offensives of which he is suspected. Kuopus had been eluding police for several weeks according to the press release. While police cautioned the public that Kuopus was believed to be a threat to himself and others, sheriff’s deputies arrested him without incident. Kuopus remains lodged in the Houghton County Jail.
