Lakes take it to Glads

ONTONAGON – The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes broke through in the second quarter, then got going to a 48-6 Great Western Conference football win over Ontonagon Friday.

The Lakes (3-2, 3-1 GWC) got two rushing touchdowns in the space of 88 seconds from quarterback Mitchel Kumpula, one on a designed run, the other on a scramble. Kumpula later threw for two scores to Tyler Roose and Trevor Ongie on subsequent drives. Nic Walli followed with back-to-back TD runs to give LL-H a 42-0 lead after three quarters.

“They were trying to jam it up on the inside and we did a good job of sealing them off and getting to the outside when we needed to,” LL-H coach Andy Crouch said.

Meanwhile, the Lakes’ defense held the Gladiators to 134 total yards (just 58 rushing) and didn’t allow a score until Tony Soumis got in from 3 yards out inside the last two minutes.

“We had a good plan going in and our kids did a really good job executing it…we had a lot of people getting to the football,” Crouch said.

Four backs had at least 40 rush yards for LL-H. Luke Monette got 65 on a fourth-quarter TD run, while Cole Beauchamp added 58 on nine carries and Wallie 51 yards on seven carries.

LL-H travels to Hancock next Friday, while Ontonagon (0-5, 0-3 GWC) hosts Munising.
