Copper Kings finish 2-2 on volleyball trip to Duluth tournament

DULUTH, Minn. – The Calumet volleyball team finished 2-2 Saturday at the Greyhound Invitational hosted by Duluth East High School.

The Copper Kings dropped a 2-1 (25-15, 19-25, 15-7) decision to the hosts and fell to 2-0 to Hill-Murray (25-14, 25-21), but defeated Deer River 2-0 (25-12, 25-21) and Duluth Denfeld (25-19, 25-18)

“Overall, I was pleased with our players and their performance. It was a great experience. The girls played even with Hill Murray in the second set tied at 21 apiece, but we just couldn’t close it,” Calumet coach Lisa Twardzik said.

For the day, the Kings got a team-leading 16 kills and seven blocks from senior Alisa Storm. Pam Torola added 14 kills and Lexie Rowe 12.

Defensively, Megan Yeo had a team-high 28 digs. Rowe added 23 and both Torola and Catherine Frantti 19.

Terilynne Budreau posted 54 assists.

“In bracket play, we settled down a little bit. No doubt, when we entered the gym it was intimidating. It just took some time for our players to realize we could battle with the best of them,” Twardzik said.

Calumet is idle this week until Saturday’s NMU?Invitational.
