Panthers upset Lakes in five sets
LAKE LINDEN – Chassell came from two sets down to spring a surprise on Lake Linden-Hubbell Tuesday, defeating the Lakes 3-2 (10-25, 21-25, 27-25, 25-14, 15-9).
The decision was the first by any Mountain Lakes Conference team over LL-H since 2010.
LL-H had a combined total of 15 kills and 14 aces in the first two sets, including five aces from Audette, but the Panthers rallied from the brink on the strength of a seven-point run.
In the fourth, Chassell served from the same rotation and broke the set open with seven more points in a row.
The fifth was tied at 4, 5 and 6, but a four-point run served by Maddie Huhta gave the Panthers the critical edge.
The winners got 10 kills and five solo blocks from Annie Ruohonen, while Shelby Seppanen added eight kills, five assists and four aces.
Macy Holombo led Chassell defensively with seven digs.
For LL-H, Sarah Audette had a team-best 10 kills and six aces. She and Carli Ongie posted 11 assists apiece. Five Lakes had at least 11 digs, led by Ciara Larson’s 20. Erin Gast added 18, Audette had 13, Codere 12 and Ongie 11.
Chassell plays at home Thursday against Ontonagon, while the Lakes are off until a home match next Tuesday vs. Baraga.
Hancock 3, L’Anse 0
L’ANSE – Hancock setter Nicole Anderson had 20 assists and was a perfect 5-for-5 on attacks as the Bulldogs swept a WestPAC match at L’Anse Tuesday, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20.
In addition, both Taylor Mattson and Allison Berryman racked up six kills apiece.
Anderson, Mattson and Brianne Maggio all had three aces.
The Bulldogs travel to Houghton Thursday.

EWEN – The Vikings went on the road to sweep a Mountain Lakes Conference match, 25-15, 25-22, 25-13.
Taylor Niemi had 14 digs for the Panthers, while Marlene Lannet had three aces.
