George Ronald Alley Jr.

CALUMET – George Ronald Alley, Jr., 73, of Calumet, passed away on October 16, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility.

George was born in Detroit, on June 17, 1940, to the late George R. Alley and Margaret M. (Swardell) Alley. George “Ron” graduated from Berkley High School and worked for the Royal Oak Public School District for 30 years, retiring in 1996.

George resided in East Jordan, Mich. with his family after retirement. In 2007 he moved to Calumet to reside with his long-time friends, Paul and Anita Campbell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his younger brother, Norman.

George was an avid sports fan, having played football in high school and also having coached Little League baseball and football. George also umpired ball games for many years. As a young man he loved to play golf, baseball and hockey every opportunity that he had. He was also a big fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings.

George was a soft-spoken gentle spirit who loved his dogs and was always ready to help his family, friends and neighbors. A fond memory of many friends was the joy George found on Christmas Eve each year dressing up as Santa Claus and making the rounds of his friends’ homes to entertain their families.

For the past three years George has resided at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility. Special thanks to Dr. McConnon and Melissa Salani, the wonderful staff at the Medical Care Facility and Woodhaven Alzheimer’s Unit for the compassionate and professional care.

Private family services will be held at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet.
