Balanced Lakes sweep Gladiators

ONTONAGON – Lake Linden-Hubbell had five kills or more from five different players in a 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-20) Mountain Lakes Conference win over Ontonagon Thursday.

Ciara Larson led the way with 11, while Morgan Codere posted eight, Carli Ongie, Julia Hendrickson and Abby McConnon five apiece.

The Lakes’ balanced attack led to 13 kills from six players in the first set, but the host Gladiators improved in the second and third.

Jennifer Stewart finished with six kills for Ontonagon, in addition to seven digs and five blocks, while Brooke Turin had four kills, six digs and five assists. Rebecca Karttunen had three kills.

Defensively, LL-H got 15 digs from Larson, 11 from Ongie and nine each from Morgan Gast and Codere.

Sarah Audette (16) and Ongie (15) nearly equally split the Lakes’ assists.

Calumet 3, L’Anse 0

L’ANSE – Ten kills from Morgan Peters helped push Calumet past L’Anse 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 in WestPAC play Thursday.

In addition to her contribution, Loretta Anderson added eight and Pam Torola six.

Terilynne Budreau totaled 25 assists.

Defensively, Megan Yeo dug up 26 balls, while Budreau finished with 19 and Peters 13.

ISHPEMING – Houghton overcome dropping the first set to win both its matches in a non-league triangular Thursday.

In the opener against the Hematites, Kayla Jacobson racked up 18 digs to lead the Gremlins, while Sydney Dillinger added 17 digs to go with five kills and three blocks.

Elisa Jurmu finished with eight kills and 10 digs, with Kenna Farrey distributing 20 assists to go with her nine digs.

Dillinger had nine kills and nine digs in the win over Superior Central. Anna Humes added three kills and two blocks. Lisa Keskimaki notched 13 assists.

Calumet and Lake Linden-Hubbell will be part of the 12-team Houghton Invitational Saturday.
