Tech volleyball edges Ohio Dominican
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Michigan Tech volleyball team outlasted host Ohio Dominican 15-12 in the fifth set to earn a 3-2 GLIAC victory Saturday. The Huskies took sets two, three and five to earn their eighth win of the season and improve to 5-6 in league play.
ODU pulled out a 25-22 win in set one by winning three of the last four points, including a pair of kills by Lauren Kraemer.
Tech responded in the second. Kendall Ward had four kills down the stretch to help the Huskies pull away for a 25-19 victory.
The Black and Gold made it 2-1 Huskies with a 25-16 win in set three. Tech had a pair of four-point runs to get some separation, including three straight serves and an ace by Madeline Haben to close it out.
The Panthers jumped out in set four to a 22-9 lead. Tech used an 8-2 run to pull within 24-17 before the hosts closed it out and sent it to the decisive fifth set.
Tech built a quick 5-1 lead in the frame and got key side-outs to maintain the advantage. Sylvie Rokosh’s kill put the match away in the Huskies’ favor.
“We were inconsistent, but that’s been our struggle all season,” said Tech coach Matt Jennings. “We’re learning how to win, and I think we took a big step towards that today. It wasn’t pretty, but we got it done and we’re happy.”
Shelby Jones tied ODU’s Kraemer for game-high honors in kills with 21 apiece. Rokosh tallied 12 kills with zero errors for a .522 hitting percentage.
Haben posted a season-high 53 assists in the five-set affair.
Rachel Pohlod had 12 digs and nine kills. Sharp also had a good day with one block solo and eight block assists.
Michigan Tech (8-12 overall) will step out of conference play for the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover this weekend in Aurora, Ill., Friday and Saturday.Tech volleyball edges Ohio Dominican
