Three local football teams receive playoff assignments
HOUGHTON – Three Copper Country football teams will extend their seasons into the MHSAA Playoffs, confirmed by the announcement of the playoff field Sunday night.
Two of those teams will meet each other in the Division 8 bracket, Region 1, District 1, when Lake Linden-Hubbell (5-4) takes a trip to L’Anse (7-2) in the pre-district round.
The Lakes and Hornets do not play in the regular season and last met in 2007, when the Hornets won a first-round meeting.
LL-H ended a two-year postseason hiatus, while L’Anse is making playoff appearances in consecutive years for the first time in school history.
Houghton (6-3), in the postseason for the first time since 2001, will play in Division 5. The Gremlins were paired with Menominee (9-0), which has been the No. 1 team in the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Division 1-7 poll each week this season.
Both of the Gremlins’ previous playoff appearances (2000 and 2001) began with games against West Iron County. The Wykons, who the WestPAC championship this year, are in Division 7, as is Ishpeming, who Houghton played after beating the Wykons in 2001.
Game times will be announced by Monday morning.
