Tech soccer takes second game of trip
NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Michigan Tech soccer team secured the No. 2 seed in the GLIAC Tournament with a 3-1 win over Walsh Sunday afternoon to wrap up the regular season. The Huskies scored two goals in the first 11 minutes and added a third before halftime. Tech will host No. 7 seeded Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Sherman Field after finishing 12-4-1 overall and 9-2-1 in the GLIAC.
“I thought we played a very nice game today and produced three beautiful goals,” Tech soccer coach Michelle Jacob said. “All three goals were set up by a persistent team effort. Our ability to possess and move the ball quickly gave us great opportunities to get shots off and score.”
Annie Dahlquist opened the game’s scoring 7:30 after the opening kick with her second of the season from Katie Boardman.
Lexi Herrewig extended her goal streak to three games with her eighth of the season three minutes later (10:36). She has four goals and two assists in the last three games.
Walsh (6-9-3, 3-8-1 GLIAC) scored its only goal of the match at 16:32 of the first half from Lauren Jokovich on a penalty kick.
Tech got the two-goal lead back after Jacqueline Mielke scored her second of the season five minutes (40:05) before halftime. She scored the unassisted goal on a blast from 25 yards out.
“We were very strong defensively all over the field and our backs and goalkeepers did a great job to pick up their long balls,” added Jacob.
Jenna Phelps picked up her eighth win between the pipes for the Huskies, stopping four Cavaliers shots. Meghan Riopelle also saw time at goalkeeper.
“It was an incredible team effort and a great way to finish up our regular season and prepare for Tuesday,” said Jacob.
Tuesday’s opponent SVSU finished 7-8-1 overall and 5-7 in conference play. Boardman scored a pair of goals against the Cardinals on Oct. 11 to lift Tech to a 2-1 win in the only meeting between the two teams in Houghton.
