Margaret “Betty” Hosang
COPPER CITY – Margaret “Betty” Hosang, 76, loving mother and grandmother, resident of Copper City, passed away on November 3, 2013, at the Omega House in Houghton.
She was born in Dollar Bay on September 13, 1937, a daughter of John and Mary (Phillips) Gestel. She graduated from Dollar Bay High School in 1956. She attended Mercy College in Detroit for two years before entering the Convent at Marian College of Fond du Lac, Wis. She graduated with a Bachelors Degree in teaching. She first taught in Fond du Lac Elementary until the Sisters of St. Agnes sent her to the Bronx and Yonkers, New York to teach. Later, she returned to teach at Saint Cecilia School in Hubbell and Torch Lake Catholic Central at St. Joseph’s in Lake Linden. She retired from Lake Linden-Hubbell Elementary School in 2000.
On June 21, 1969, she was married to Lawrence Hosang at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Dollar Bay. He passed away in 1999.
She was a charter member of the Bootjack Fire Department Auxiliary. She was a religious education teacher for many years. She had been a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and Altar Society until it closed. She was currently a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden. Betty loved to plant flower beds and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Dorothy.
She is survived by a daughter, Beth (Walter) Hilt of Copper City; four grandchildren, William, Rebecca, Luke and Isaac Jarvi; two step-grandchildren, Mercadies Hilt and Caska Haaland; sister, Mary (Garth) Wooten; brothers, Robert Gestel and Bernard (Milly) Gestel; sisters-in-law, Mary and Ann Hosang; brothers-in-law, John and Carl (Julie) Hosang; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 8, in St. Joseph Church in Lake Linden with Fr. Francis Dobrzenski to officiate.
A luncheon will follow the Mass in the church hall. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. on Thursday in the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden with a parish prayer service at 7:30. Burial will be at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden.
