Ernest D. Poisson
HUBBELL – Ernest D. Poisson, 86, of Hubbell, passed away on November 9, 2013, at Our Lady of Mercy in Hubbell.
Ernie was born on October 17, 1927, the son of Dona J. and Clara Poisson, stepson of Margaret Poisson.
Ernie owned and operated “Ernie’s Service Station” in Hubbell for 50 plus years.
He loved to fish and hunt, but his greatest love was fixing the kid’s bikes and repairing toys for children of the area for Christmas. He and the Knights of Columbus hosted Christmas parties for the kids with the help of Santa and the Elves. He also delivered baskets to the nursing homes. He was known as the “U.P. Santa.” Paul Harvey called him “Santa’s Helper.”
Ernie was a member of the former St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Hubbell where he served on the altar for many years. He was currently a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden.
He is survived by two sisters, Clara Taipalus of Alma, Mich. and Mary Alice Bobbitt of Kissimee, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Nancy Poisson of St. Louis, Mich.; two very special people, Francis and Ilsa Monville; and many nieces and nephews.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Joseph Poisson of St. Louis, Mich.; and brother-in-law, Jon Taipalus of Alma, Mich.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden with Fr. Martin Flynn to officiate. After the Mass on Wednesday, a celebration of Ernie’s life and a luncheon will be held in the Lakes Lounge in Lake Linden from 1 until 4 p.m.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden with a parish prayer service at 7:30. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden.
