Lawrence E. Mukavetz
CALUMET – Lawrence E. Mukavetz, age 96, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2013, at the Portage Health Hospital.
Lawrence was employed at the CCC Camp Pori near Mass City as a youth. He was employed as a miner with the Calumet and Hecla and White Pine Mines. He married Ethel (Strand) Pelland on November 10, 1945. He was a member of Sacred Heart’s Thursday Rosary Group, Cursillo and Men’s Fourth Day Group. He was a contributing member of Amazing Grace Ministries of the Keweenaw and the Martha and Mary Conference of St. Vincent De Paul.
He was also a member of the CLK Sportsmen’s Club, an avid hunter and fisherman, Master Gardener, and berry picker. Many people benefited from his labors in the garden. He was honored by Mickey Redmond, Detroit Red Wing broadcaster, on his 95th birthday and attended the hockey game with his family.
He is survived by his sister, Irene Maiale and family of Marine City; his son, Laurence (Janet) Mukavetz of Calumet. He was the beloved grandfather of Shawna (Michael Hardy) Mukavetz and Nathan (Simi Jain) Mukavetz; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a step daughter-in-law, Rosemarie Archambeau and family.
He was a very loving uncle to his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ethel in 1986; and step-son, Walter Pelland. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Kay Kocjan, Helen Moreno; and brother, John Mukavec; and infant twin, Victor.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday, December 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Fr. Abraham Mupparathara to officiate.
Friends may call at the Ryan Funeral Home on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to Mass at Church.
A vigil Service is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A church luncheon will follow the Mass.
