LAURIUM – Melvin Hirvela, 77, a resident of Laurium, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium.
He was born on July 25, 1936 in Calumet, a son of the late John and Anna (Kaario) Hirvela. He graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1954.
On March 16, 1957 he married his sweetie, Lorraine Maki.
Melvin was a life-long truck driver, driving most of his career for A. Lindberg and Sons in Ishpeming, retiring in 1997.
First and foremost in Mel’s life were his dear Lord and his family. He was a jack of all trades, and could fix anything. He was always willing to help his family and friends with all of their projects. He enjoyed watching the Detroit Red Wings, Green Bay Packers and Finland Calling on Sunday mornings. He also loved his camp and sauna.
Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Marie Pies; brother, John Hirvela; two sons-in-law, Terry Mytty and Greg Spry.
Melvin was a member and served on the council of National Lutheran Church in Calumet until its closing; he was now a member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran in Houghton.
Surviving are his wife, Lorraine; son, Brian of Hancock; four daughters, Cheryl Spry of Calumet, Diane (Bruce) Bykkonen of Calumet, Paula (Tim) Huls of Calumet and Susan (Mark) Kela of Point Mills. He was papa to his 13 grandchildren, Joel, Jordan, Jillian, Justin, Jessica, Rachel, Dylan, Cassandra, Christina, Mandy (Peter), Paula, Ashley, and Tracy; and his eight great grandchildren, Jasmyn, Alyssa, Ava, Maia, Mark, Andrew, Alexander, and Isabelle; one sister, Mildred Karpinen of Calumet; one brother, Kenneth (Janet) Hirvela of West Allis, Wis.; also survived by brothers-in-law, Edwin Maki and Marvin Maki; and sisters-in-law, Karen Sintkowski and Marilyn Lompre; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 4 at 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home with Pastor Glenn Schwanke to officiate.
Friends may call at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 until 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
