Copper Country Chorale Christmas Concert

HOUGHTON – The songs of Christmas are filling the airwaves and soon they’ll be filling the Portage Lake United Church when the Copper Country Chorale performs its Christmas show.

Carol Waisanen, director of the chorale, said the concert is titled “Glory Through the Ages” and will act as a theme for the show.

“Several of the pieces have the word ‘glory’ in them,” she said. “One of the pieces is called ‘Glory to God in the Highest’ by the American composer Randall Thompson.

Other songs the chorale will be singing include “Christmas Time is Here,” a piece from Spain called “Fum, Fum, Fum” and Daniel Pinkham’s “Christmas Cantata.” They will also be performing a few selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” including the “Hallelujah” chorus.

Waisanen said the show has been well received in the past and those who saw the show last year were very appreciative.

“I would say in general they’ve been very positive about our performance,” she said.

Compared to shows in previous years, Waisanen said the show won’t really differ too much. But she hopes that those who come to show receive inspiration for their holiday season.

“I’m sure they will take pleasure in hearing the group and hearing the individuals who are singing solo,” she said. “We also have the featured group, The Sometimes Monday Night Recorder Group.”

The chorale began rehearsing for the show at the end of September and rehearse once a week.

Waisanen has been directing the chorale since January of 2011. But the chorale itself has been in existence since 1965. Even before taking over directorial duties, Waisanen and her husband David were both members.

The chorale is also always looking for new members so anybody interested in joining should give Carol Waisanen a call at 482-8951. Rehearsals take place at 7 p.m. on Mondays at The Chapel of St. Matthew in Finlandia University.

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Sunday and should last for about an hour and a half. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the door or from a chorale member. Refreshments will also be served following the concert.
