Finlandia hockey defeated
HANCOCK – The Finlandia men’s and women’s hockey teams were turned away empty-handed from their home series against Concordia (Wis.) and Lake Forest, respectively, over the weekend at Houghton County Arena.
The Lions men lost 8-2 to the Falcons Saturday and 4-1 Sunday.
Saturday, Travis Armstrong put Finlandia ahead just 35 seconds in, but CUW had the next six, including three on a major penalty near the game’s midpoint.
Shigenobu Kakudate had Finlandia’s other goal, his fourth of the season, on a late second-period power play.
Troy Chandler made 19 saves in 35 minutes before yielding to Andrew Brownlee, who stopped 14 shots.
Sunday, Ryan Daavettila had the Lions’ lone goal, midway through the second period to cut the deficit to 2-1. Concordia scored twice in the third to secure the sweep.
Chandler stopped 24 shots for Finlandia (0-10-0, 0-8-0 NCHA).
On the women’s side, Finlandia got goals from Abby Gallaher and Siera Hache but fell 10-2 Friday. Saturday, the visiting Foresters blanked the Lions 7-0.
The Finlandia women are now off until the new year, while the men have one more series in 2013, a pair of home games Friday and Saturday with Wisconsin-Superior.
