Joyce M. Alatalo
PAINESDALE – Joyce M. Alatalo, 68, of Painesdale, died on November 25, 2013.
Joyce (Howard) Alatalo was born December 8, 1944, in Deckerville, Mich. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Leona.
She is survived by two sisters, Patricia (Robert – deceased) Neu and Linda (Ray) Kamen.
Joyce was previously married to Raymond Alatalo for more than 25 years and they raised three children together, Garland, Jamie (Steven) Linna and Marcy. She also had three step-children, Raymond (Gina), Sheila (Joseph) Tormala and Brian (Pam). Joyce had five grandchildren, Katrina, Bryon, Kristyna, Jordin and Sawyer; and multiple nieces and a nephew.
When reflecting on her childhood, Joyce spoke of adventures and memories made with her two sisters and often spoke of her mother’s delicious homemade meals. She had a close relationship with her father as well, and shared many great memories with him throughout her younger years in life. In her free time, Joyce loved being outdoors and planting and taking care of flowers in her yard.
Joyce was known by many as being ambitious and a hard worker and she held many jobs throughout her life starting in the Detroit area and then in the Upper Peninsula. A few of her most memorable jobs were as a manager at the Bonanza Family Restaurant in Houghton and she also worked and retired a few years ago from the Houghton County Medical Care Facility where she formed friendships that she kept in contact with throughout her life. Joyce was always known for her sense of humor, huge heart, and making people laugh whether at family events or in the kitchens where she worked. Her fun-loving spirit and laughter will be remembered by so many.
Joyce moved downstate to Midland, Mich., in the summer of 2012, so she could live closer to her daughter, son-in-law and two youngest grandchildren. This also allowed her to spend more time with her two sisters and nieces that also lived in the area. Joyce loved to travel and was able to visit Italy, China and also take several trips out to Denver, Colorado to visit her son and daughter in the last several years.
Joyce was an amazing mother, wife, sister, step-mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt and friend to so many. She will be missed tremendously.
At Joyce’s request, a small private service was held in Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland with her children and sisters and their families on Saturday, November 30.
