Martha Arlene Harjala

COPPER CITY – Martha Arlene Harjala, 86, a resident of Copper City passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2013, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.

Martha was born October 17, 1927, in Fulton Location, a daughter of William and Edla (Krapu) Maki. She attended Mohawk Schools.

Martha was previouly married to Bob Kumpula. She later was married to Leonard “Asti” Harjala and he preceded her in death in April of 2011.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Arthur Kemila, Elmer Maki, Einar Makie, Arnold Maki and Leroy Makie; three sisters, Sylvia Willette, Ellen Hitsman and Verna Raisanen; and her husband, Leonard in 2011.

Martha was employed at Vertin Brothers Department Store for several years. She enjoyed her family, loved watching her grandson’s hockey games, and going for her “little putz” every day around town.

She is survived by son, James (Carol) Kumpula of Mohawk; daughter, Carol (Ray) Rinne of Copper City; five grandchildren, Lisa (Shane) Jacques, Amy Kumpula, Jamie Kumpula, Bob (Mandy) Kumpula, Carrie (Scott) Meneguzzo; seven great grandchildren, Brendan, Chelsea and Carli Jacques, Jynessa Maninga, Carter Meneguzzo, Charlotte and Brynn Kumpula; one sister, Dorothy (Edward) Harjala.

A graveside service will be held in the Spring. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.

The Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
